Hanoi's quieter side sits a few streets from the lake: river bridges at first light, a wholesale flower market that runs through the night, and museums most tour groups skip.

A French steel cantilever bridge from 1902, bombed and patched during the American War, that still carries trains down the middle, scooters on both sides and a narrow walkway on the edge. From the middle you look down on banana plots and vegetable gardens on the Red River sandbank.

- Walk from the north edge of the Old Quarter to the stairs by Long Biên station (Trần Nhật Duật street side); about 10 minutes from Đồng Xuân market.

- 5:30–7:00 for sunrise over the river and the morning exercise crowd.

- Stay on the pedestrian walkway on the outer edge. The centre is a working rail line: never step onto or sit on the track, and keep clear when a train passes.

A stretch of the north–south railway where houses stand an arm's length from the rails. It became a café scene, and since 2019 the city has repeatedly ordered the track-side cafés closed to visitors and put barriers and police at the entrances; enforcement comes and goescheck.
- Getting there
- The best-known section runs between Phùng Hưng and Trần Phú streets, a 10-minute walk west of Hoàn Kiếm lake.
- Best time
- Train times shift with the timetablecheck. If you want to see a train pass, watch from the public pavement at a level crossing, behind the barrier.
- Cost
- Free to look from the street; cafés, when allowed to open, charge about 40,000–70,000 VND for a drinkcheck
- Visit with respect
- Do not walk along or sit on the track, and do not pass barriers or ignore staff. People live here: keep doorways clear and keep your voice down.
- Not for everyone
- If the section is closed on the day, do not try to get in through a café or side alley. Skip it.
