Vélez-Málaga is the market capital of the Axarquía, 4 km inland from its own beach resort, Torre del Mar. The Moorish old town on the hill is small, cheap and barely touristed; the coast has the hotels, the promenade and the bus links. Most travellers sleep on the coast and come up for a half-day, or use Vélez as a low-cost base for Málaga, Nerja and the white villages.

Getting around

The old town is walkable but steep; the hill between La Villa and the modern centre is a real climb. Four city bus lines link Vélez with Torre del Mar, Almayate and Caleta de Vélez; single ticket €1.30, pay the driver. A car is the practical way to reach the Axarquía villages — roads are narrow and winding but in good condition. The Vélez–Torre del Mar tram closed in 2012 and has no reopening date.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime market town; the real risks are summer heat, steep stepped streets in the old town and unlit mountain roads at night. Beach theft happens in Torre del Mar in August — leave nothing on the sand.
  • Summer parking in Torre del Mar is difficult; use the underground car parks in Vélez (Plaza del Carmen, Mercado de San Francisco).
  • Restaurants serve lunch from about 13:00 and dinner from about 20:00; kitchens close between services.
  • Village buses in the Axarquía run few times a day and not at all on some Sundays: check times before you rely on them.
  • The old town is on a hill with stepped streets; not ideal with heavy luggage.
