Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
  • Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.

Tomar is a small Ribatejo city built around the Convent of Christ, the Templar headquarters that became the Order of Christ and backed Portugal's 15th-century sea expansion. The walled convent sits above a grid of old streets, a river park and a 17th-century aqueduct. Trains from Lisbon run hourly in about 2 h, so it works as one night or a long day out.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable; the climb to the Convent of Christ is the only real effort. Two city bus lines run at about €1 a ticket, valid 1 h. Regional trains reach Entroncamento, Lisbon and Coimbra; buses cover Fátima and nearby towns.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Fátima

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Bus from Tomar, or train to Entroncamento then bus

Sanctuary and pilgrimage site; half a day is enough if you are not attending a mass.

Batalha

caution

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Train to Entroncamento, change, then bus or taxi from Batalha station

The monastery justifies the trip, but the connections are slow; check times first.

Alcobaça

caution

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Bus or train via Entroncamento and Leiria

Monastery and town centre; better as an overnight if you want both Batalha and Alcobaça.

Nazaré

caution

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Bus via Leiria, or train to Valado then local bus

Beach and big-wave viewpoint; the surf season is winter, the beach season is summer.

Entroncamento

skip

Door to door: About 30 min

Train, about 15–20 min

Rail junction only; useful for connections, not for sightseeing.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Historic centre (Praça da República and Rua Serpa Pinto)

Walk to the convent gate in 10–15 min uphill; most guesthouses and the oldest bar are here.

Near the Nabão river and Hotel dos Templários

Quieter, riverside park and pool hotels; still 15 min on foot from the convent.

Around the railway station

Cheapest rooms and the matchbox museum; a 15–20 min walk from the centre, fine with a backpack.

Watch out

Safety

Tomar is a calm small city; the real risks are the steep, uneven climb to the convent, summer heat and pickpockets only in the crowded festival years. Standard precautions are enough.
  • The convent is uphill: wear shoes with grip, not sandals, and carry water in summer.
  • Sunday and holiday mornings at the convent are free until 14:00, so queues build early.
  • Many small guesthouses take cash only; ask before arrival.
  • Inland Ribatejo summers hit the high 30s °C; shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
