Most independent travellers use 'support for the Cuban people', which needs a full-time schedule of activities with Cuban people and private businesses (casas, paladares, private guides), and records kept for 5 years. US persons may not stay at properties on the State Department's Cuba Prohibited Accommodations List (11 more Havana hotels added 14 July 2025) or deal directly with entities on the Cuba Restricted List (GAESA and other military-linked businesses). Rules tightened in 2025–26; check OFAC before booking (checked 2026-09).
  • Cuba ↗Medical insurance is compulsory for entry: carry proof of a policy valid in Cuba, or buy a Cuban (Asistur) policy on arrival. US-based insurers are generally not accepted in Cuba; flights from the US include a Cuban medical policy in the fare — keep the boarding pass as proof (check with your airline). Hospital bills are payable in cash only, so buy cover with medical evacuation as well (checked 2026-09).
  • Cuba ↗No cards: US-issued debit and credit cards have never worked in Cuba because of the embargo, and since 6 June 2026 Visa and Mastercard cards from any country are no longer accepted (Cuban Central Bank, after a foreign processor dropped FINCIMEX under US Executive Order 14404). Bring enough US dollars or euros in cash for the whole stay plus an emergency reserve (checked 2026-09).

Santa Clara sits near the middle of Cuba and is the country's fifth-largest city, about 229,000 people. Almost everyone comes for one thing: the Che Guevara mausoleum and museum on the western edge, plus the railway monument where his column derailed an armoured train in 1958. The centre itself is a working provincial capital with a long pedestrian boulevard, a handful of peso-priced eating places and casas particulares rather than resorts. It works as a one-night break on the Havana–Trinidad road, or as a base for the Cayo Santa María beaches if you are flying into Abel Santamaría airport. Two nights is enough to see everything without rushing; more than that and you will be looking for things to do.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Parque Vidal to the Tren Blindado monument is about 10–15 minutes on foot. For the Che complex, 2–3 km west, take a taxi, pedicab or horse carriage and agree the price first (roughly US$1–5 depending on distance). Taxis are plentiful and cheap by North American standards; shared taxis run to Havana and other cities. Local trains exist but are unreliable: check before you plan around one.

Watch out

Safety

Santa Clara is a low-crime city by regional standards; the real risks are cash and power failures, transport that does not turn up, and unlicensed taxis. Walk the centre at night without drama, but keep valuables out of sight and do not rely on cards.
  • Cash is the rule: bring enough euros or dollars, and expect card and ATM failures. Currency exchange at the airport is often closed; queues elsewhere are slow.
  • Power cuts and fuel shortages affect the whole country: keep a torch, a power bank and a backup plan for transport.
  • Photography is banned inside the Che mausoleum; keep phones and cameras away.
  • US travellers report being turned away from the Che museum and mausoleum on the basis of nationality; there is no published rule, so treat it as possible.
  • Agree taxi and pedicab prices before you get in.
  • Check your own government's current Cuba advice before booking: several countries advise against non-essential travel.
