Columbus is a small Wisconsin city of about 5,000 people, 28 miles northeast of Madison, with a downtown of pre-1930s buildings along James and Ludington streets. It is a rail stop on the daily Empire Builder between Chicago and Seattle/Portland, so it works as a car-free overnight between Madison and Wisconsin Dells. Most travellers see the downtown, the antique mall and a supper club in half a day, then move on.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Outside it, streets are wide and spread out, so a car or a ride-hailing app is the practical option; local taxi coverage is thin — check. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops at Columbus station, 359 N Ludington St, once daily in each direction.

Columbus is a quiet small city and street crime is low. The real risks are winter driving on US 151 and I-39/90, deer on the road at dusk, and thin late-night transport — check before you count on a ride.
