Barnard Castle is a small market town in County Durham, population about 5,800, sitting just north of the A66 with the River Tees running through it. Two sights carry the visit: the ruined castle above the river and the Bowes Museum, a 19th-century French-style palace with a mechanical silver swan that runs at 2pm. Everything else is a compact high street, a few pubs and river walks. One night is enough; two if you want to walk the Tees valley or use it as a base for the northern Pennines.

A quiet, low-crime market town; the real risks are the narrow A67 bridge, uneven riverbank paths and rural roads after dark. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • The A67 bridge at the south edge of town is narrow with a sharp turn; heavy vehicles are banned and caravans or trailers should avoid it.
  • Free parking on the town-centre cobbles is not allowed on Wednesday and Saturday mornings (market days).
