Fraserburgh is a working fishing port at the north-east corner of Aberdeenshire, 40 miles north of Aberdeen and with no railway station. Its one headline sight is the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses at Kinnaird Head, the first lighthouse on the Scottish mainland. Everything else — harbour, heritage centre, long beach, castle ruins along the coast — fits into a short stop. Come for a night, or as a day trip if you have a car.

Getting around

Walk: the centre, harbour, lighthouse museum and heritage centre are all within about 20 minutes on foot. Buses run to Aberdeen (X67/X68, roughly two an hour Mon–Sat, 90 min), Peterhead (69/69A, about every two hours) and Banff (271/273, a couple a day, not Sundays). Taxis are the fallback after the last bus.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet port and one of the safer places in Scotland. The real issues are the weather, dark unlit streets after the pubs close, and the lack of late buses: sort your ride home before you go out.
  • No railway station: the nearest is Aberdeen, 40 miles south, so plan around the bus or drive.
  • Sunday and late-evening buses are much less frequent than weekday daytime services.
  • At night, drunks around the pubs: keep your distance and use a taxi.
  • Some pubs are cash only; carry a little cash.
  • Coastal weather changes fast: wind and rain even in summer, so pack a shell.
