Muizenberg is a Cape Town suburb on False Bay, about 25 km south of the city centre and roughly 45 minutes by train. It is the country's best-known learn-to-surf beach, with warm-ish water in summer, a long promenade to St James, and cheap beds right on the front. Sights are thin, so most travellers use it as a beach base for the Cape Peninsula or a day trip from Cape Town.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station, Main Road, beach and Surfer's Corner sit within about 1 km. Metrorail trains run to Cape Town (about 45 min) and south to Fish Hoek and Simon's Town (about 20 min). For the Cape Peninsula and winelands you need a car, taxi or tour.

Safety

Daytime beach and Main Road are fine; the station area and beach after dark are not. Use the train in daylight at peak hours, keep valuables hidden, and treat the sea with respect: cold water, strong shore dump, no lifeguards off-season.
  • Do not walk the beach or station area after dark, and keep phones and bags out of sight on the train.
  • Metrorail trains are busiest and safest at weekday peak hours; check the current service before relying on a late train.
  • Sea temperatures are cold outside summer and the surf break has a strong shore dump: use a school and a wetsuit.
  • Sunburn and wind are the everyday risks; the south-easter picks up fast in the afternoon.
