Braintree is a small Essex market town with a textile-mill past, a decent district museum and a large outlet village on its edge. It is not a destination in its own right. Most travellers pass through on the Greater Anglia line from London Liverpool Street, or use it as a cheap bed for Stansted Airport, 15 miles west. Give it two to three hours, or one night at most.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Local buses run through the day and some routes into the early morning and late evening, mostly calling at the bus interchange between Manor Street and Victoria Street. Trains link the town centre station, Braintree Freeport and Cressing. For anything outside town you want a car or a bike: the Flitch Way shared path runs traffic-free towards Great Dunmow and Bishop's Stortford, with a short on-road section at Great Dunmow.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real issues are dark, uneven pavements after rain, heavy A-road traffic and Saturday-night drinking in the centre. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • Rush-hour and weekend traffic on the A120 and A131 is heavy; allow extra time if driving to Stansted.
  • Many small museums and the windmill open only on set days or open days: check before you travel.
  • The Kelvedon Hatch bunker takes cash only and is about 25 miles south-west, not a walk from town.
  • Saturday nights in the town centre are lively and drink-fuelled; the atmosphere is not for everyone.
