Monmouth is the county town of Monmouthshire, sitting where the Wye, Monnow and Trothy meet on the Welsh border. Its draw is small and walkable: a fortified medieval bridge, a Georgian square, a Norman castle remnant and the riverside walks and viewpoints just outside town. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus, coach or car, and most visitors see it in a day.

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact: Monnow Street, Agincourt Square and Church Street are a 10-minute walk end to end. Buses link Monmouth with Newport, Abergavenny, Chepstow and Hereford, and National Express coach 323 calls daily. For the Kymin, Skenfrith or the Wye Valley you need a car, a taxi or a long walk.

Watch out

Safety

Monmouth is a low-crime small town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are rural: fast lanes with no pavement, flooding on riverside paths after heavy rain, and weather that turns on the hills.
  • No railway station: the nearest are Chepstow and Abergavenny, each about 30 minutes away by road.
  • Narrow pavements on Monnow Street get crowded on sunny weekends.
  • Rural lanes are single-track in places; drive slowly and use passing places.
  • Check bus and coach times before you commit: some services are a few times a day only.
