Des Moines

Give Des Moines 1–2 nights as an I-80 stop: State Capitol, Art Center and East Village in a day, plus one day-trip if you have a car.

Des Moines is Iowa's capital and largest city, at the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, about 330 mi (539 km) east of Omaha and 200 mi (320 km) south of Minneapolis. It is a car city: sights spread from downtown to the Art Center and the zoo, and the airport sits 5 mi (8 km) south of the centre. Most travellers pass through on I-80 or come for the August State Fair.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-235 crosses downtown, I-80 and I-35 ring the city, and there are no tolls. DART buses cover the metro ($1.75, express $2; check current fares) and the free D-Line route 42 loops downtown Mon–Fri 6:30AM–6PM. B-Cycle bike share has downtown stations ($6/24 h; check). Downtown has one-way streets; the Des Moines River decides whether a street carries an E prefix, so E 1st Ave and 1st Ave are different streets.

Watch out

Safety

Des Moines is generally calm; the real risks are winter ice, summer heat and thunderstorms, and leaving valuables visible in a parked car.
  • Winter brings snow and ice: road closures are possible, and snow-emergency parking rules are enforced with towing at your cost.
  • Summer heat index often reaches about 33°C (91°F) by day and 20°C (68°F) at night, with spikes near 40°C (105°F); plan indoor stops.
  • Spring and summer thunderstorms can turn severe, with a tornado risk.
  • The nearest Amtrak station is 72 km (45 mi) south in Osceola; a Jefferson Lines bus links it to Des Moines.
