Harwich is a mid-Cape town of about 13,000 people split into villages: Harwich Port on Nantucket Sound, plus West Harwich and South Harwich along Route 28. It is a low-key base — beaches, the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a small theatre and a cluster of inns — not a sightseeing town. Most visitors come for two or three nights in summer, or pass through on Route 6 between Dennis and Orleans.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Route 28 runs the length of town and Route 6 is the fast east–west road. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a paved 22-mile path through town for bikes; rent in Orleans or Dennis if you did not bring one. Seasonal ferries to Nantucket leave from Harwich Port. Local buses are limited — check the regional Cape Cod RTA schedule before relying on them.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are summer traffic, rip currents at the ocean-side beaches and ticks in the woods. 911 works everywhere.
  • Summer traffic on Route 28 and Route 6 backs up on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings: drive mid-week or early morning.
  • Many restaurants and inns close or cut hours from November to April: check before booking a winter trip.
  • Beach parking lots fill by mid-morning in July and August; some need a town sticker or a daily fee.
  • Ticks are present in the conservation areas: use repellent and check after walks.
