  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hot Springs is a small Ouachita Mountains town built around Hot Springs National Park, the country's smallest national park and its first federally protected reservation (1832, park since 1921). Bathhouse Row, eight early-1900s bathhouses on Central Avenue, is the core: two still run as spas, one is the park visitor center and museum. Downtown is walkable; everything else needs a car. Two nights covers it well, three if you add the lakes or Oaklawn.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown is safe to walk by day and early evening; the usual small-town cautions apply after dark around bars. The specific risk here is the water: springs run near 62 °C, so use the fountains and the bathhouses, not the source.
  • Spring water reaches about 62 °C: do not put your hands or body straight into a spring, and get a doctor's written consent before bathing if you have a heart or respiratory condition.
  • Bathhouse Row spas take walk-ins but book up on weekends and race days — reserve ahead.
  • Oaklawn's live racing season runs roughly January to April; children's entry rules differ between racing and simulcast seasons — check before you go.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real; carry water and do the trails early.
