Victoria is British Columbia's capital, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, and it feels nothing like Vancouver across the water: Edwardian stone blocks, a working Inner Harbour, a small Chinatown and gardens. Downtown is walkable in a day; the rest of the island needs a car or a bus. Most travellers give it 2 nights, more if they add Sooke or the west coast.

Getting around
Downtown is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes. BC Transit buses cover the city and the peninsula: flat fare, day passes available, no transfers on a single cash fare. Bike rental is easy and the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails are paved. A car only pays off for Sooke, Port Renfrew or the Cowichan Valley.
