Felixstowe is a Suffolk port town that still works as a low-key seaside resort: a pier, a mile of promenade, shingle beaches, beach huts and a big container port on the southern edge. Trains from Ipswich take under 30 minutes, so it fits as a day trip from Ipswich or a quiet one- or two-night stop on the Suffolk coast. Sights are close together and the town is best walked.

Getting around

Walk: the promenade runs about a mile north and south of the pier, and the town centre is 10–15 min inland. Buses 75, 76 and 77 run from Ipswich; the 77 goes hourly to the town centre (about 45 min) and on to Landguard Fort and the port viewing area. Taxis are useful for the ferry and the fort. National Cycle Route 51 passes through town.

Safety

A quiet seaside town. Beach and swimming guidance is seasonal: follow local signage and lifeguard flags where present, and check tide and weather before walking the shore or the Deben mouth.
  • The port area is working freight land: no international ferries, and access roads are not for strolling.
  • Felixstowe Ferry has very little parking; use the cliff-top car park and walk down.
  • Seafront cafés and attractions run shorter or weekend-only hours outside summer: check before you go.
  • The beach is mostly shingle, not sand; swim only between the usual summer flags.
