Rosario is Argentina's third-largest city and the biggest in Santa Fe province, built on a bend of the Paraná river about 300 km upriver from Buenos Aires. It is a working port and university city rather than a polished tourist town: the draw is the riverfront, a dense run of early-1900s architecture along the centre, a strong museum set and a nightlife that starts after midnight. Two nights covers it; three if you want a river island day or a match at either football stadium.

Getting around

No metro or train in the city: buses and a trolleybus line run on a rechargeable card (SUBE), and taxis plus app cars are cheap enough that most visitors use them for anything past walking distance. The centre is flat and the riverfront is a continuous promenade, so walking works between the Flag Memorial, Paseo del Siglo and Parque de España. Rosario is one of Argentina's more bike-friendly cities, with a public bike scheme and a flat grid.

Watch out

Safety

Rosario's gang violence sits in specific outer neighbourhoods and does not touch the tourist centre, but street theft does: keep phones and jewellery out of sight, stay in busy streets at night, and skip the villas.
  • Bag-snatching and phone theft are the realistic risk, including in daylight: keep phones out of hand near bus stops and at night.
  • Do not walk into the villas on the northern and southern edges, including the area between Vera Mujica and Av. Francia Bis near Alto Rosario.
  • If you are mugged, hand over what is asked for and leave; do not resist.
  • Summer thunderstorms can drop heavy rain in an hour; check the forecast before a river or island day.
  • Nightlife peaks around 02:00 and ends at sunrise — plan the next morning accordingly.
