The fort stands on the cliff above the Lower Town. From the Upper Town it is a short flat walk; from the bay it is a steep climb, so take a taxi up if it is hot.
This is where a Dutch gun salute answered a US warship in November 1776, often described as the first foreign salute to the young United States. A plaque in the fort recounts it.
