Schreiber
Stop for one night on a Highway 17 drive: the rail museum, the beach and the stromatolite shore take half a day, not a trip of their own.
Schreiber is a township of about 1,000 people on the north shore of Lake Superior, built in 1883 as a Canadian Pacific Railway construction camp and still a rail town. It is a fuel-and-bed stop on the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, with a small railway museum, a Lake Superior beach and a fossil-bearing rock shore nearby. Most travellers see it in an afternoon and sleep one night.

A car is the practical way to reach the beach, the channel and Rainbow Falls; the town centre itself is small enough to walk in 15–20 minutes. Ontario Northland and Kasper Bus both stop in Schreiber several days a week on the Thunder Bay–Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay–White River runs. No local transit.

- Distances are long: Thunder Bay is about 2 h 30 min, Sault Ste. Marie about 4 h. Fuel before you leave town.
- Moose and deer on Highway 17 at dusk and after dark; the stretch is two-lane with passing lanes.
- Cell coverage is patchy on parts of Highway 17 outside town.
- The Schreiber Channel shore is uneven bedrock: wear shoes with grip and stay off wet rock.
