  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Agoura Hills is a small city in the Conejo Valley, on the 101 between Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks, and the western gateway to Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Almost nothing here is walkable from a bus stop, so a car decides the trip. One night covers the trails, the old western film set at Paramount Ranch and the Reyes Adobe; two nights if you hike or ride horses.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is effectively required: the sights sit south of the 101 in the mountains and no useful bus reaches them. The 101 runs through the city, with exits at Reyes Adobe, Kanan and Lindero Canyon. Rideshare works for short hops but is thin late at night and in the canyons. In summer a city-funded bus has run to Malibu beach; check the current schedule before relying on it.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–45 min to the beach

Kanan Road south over the mountains to PCH, then west or east along the coast

Kanan is a winding canyon road; go early on summer weekends or the beach lots fill.

Thousand Oaks

go

Door to door: About 15 min

101 north, about 10 min

Same valley, more shops and restaurants; useful on a rainy day.

Door to door: About 30 min

101 north then 23 north, about 25 min

Reagan Presidential Library and the Ronald Reagan trails.

Ojai

go

Door to door: About 1–1.25 h

101 north to Ventura, then 33 north, about 1 h

A full day with the 33 canyon drive; better as an overnight if you want the trails.

Door to door: About 50 min

101 north to the 1, about 45 min

Harbour, beaches and Channel Islands ferry links.

Santa Barbaraovernight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

101 north, about 1 h 15 min

Doable as a long day, but the drive and the city both deserve a night.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Agoura Road corridor

The main hotel strip along the 101: Sheraton, Hampton Inn and similar, walking distance to a few restaurants but not to the trails.

Kanan Road and Whizin Market Square

Shops, delis and BBQ; the closest thing to a walkable centre, still easiest by car.

Cornell and Malibou Lake

Rural, quiet, near Paramount Ranch and the Old Place; a handful of rentals, no hotels.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime suburban city; the real hazards are canyon roads, summer heat on exposed trails and seasonal brush-fire risk. Standard US advice applies: 911 for anything urgent.
  • Mountain roads (Mulholland, Kanan, Cornell) are narrow, unlit and shared with cyclists and motorcycles: drive them in daylight.
  • Summer inland heat is real; carry more water than you think you need on exposed trails.
  • Cell signal drops in the canyons and on parts of the Santa Monica Mountains trails.
  • Brush fires are a seasonal risk: check conditions and never park in dry grass.
  • The Old Place takes reservations and expects you to be on time; it sits in a residential area, so keep noise down.
