  • Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
  • Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
  • Georgia ↗Many passports enter visa-free for a long stay; if yours needs a visa, apply only on the official e-visa portal.
  • Georgia ↗Do not plan travel to Abkhazia or South Ossetia: crossing their boundary lines from Georgian-controlled land is treated as illegal entry, and many governments advise against it.
  • Georgia ↗In Orthodox churches women cover their heads and shoulders and wear a skirt or a wrap; men remove hats and avoid shorts.
  • Georgia ↗Carry Georgian lari in small notes for minibuses, markets and the metro card; cards work in most Tbilisi cafés and shops but not everywhere outside the capital.

Gori is a compact Shida Kartli town of about 10,000 people, an hour from Tbilisi, and it exists on the traveller map for two reasons: it is where Joseph Stalin was born, and it sits 10 km from Uplistsikhe, a rock-cut Silk Road town older than Christianity in Georgia. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the caves need a taxi or a bus. Most people come as a day trip and leave, which is a mistake only if you want the fortress at sunset or the hilltop church.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact: Stalin Museum, birthplace, fortress path and the main square are all within 15 minutes on foot. For Uplistsikhe, use the Maxim app (about 10–15 lari each way) or a marshrutka from the bus station (1 lari, 700 m walk from the village). Taxis waiting by the museum quote far more than the app.

Stalin Avenue and the main square

The museum, fortress path and most cafés are within 10 minutes on foot. Best for one night with bags.

Old Gori, near the castle

Quieter streets below the fortress; a handful of guesthouses and The Pub. 10–15 min walk to the square.

Chavchavadze Street

The cross-street with the bazaar, shops and several restaurants; a practical second choice if the square is full.

Watch out

Safety

Gori is a small, low-crime town and the centre is fine on foot after dark. The real cautions are the restricted boundary north of the city, unshaded rock at Uplistsikhe in summer, and taxis near the museum that quote several times the app fare.
  • Uplistsikhe is a rock site with uneven steps and no shade: go at opening in summer, carry water.
  • Some areas of Uplistsikhe are fenced for restoration; check what is open before you pay.
  • The Stalin Museum labels are mostly Georgian and Russian; ask at the ticket desk about an English-speaking guide.
  • Do not walk north toward the South Ossetia boundary; the administrative line is close and access is restricted.
  • Marshrutkas to Tbilisi leave when full and stop running in the early evening: confirm the last departure when you arrive.
