- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
Barrie sits at the end of Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe, 95 km north of Toronto on Highway 400, and is the practical base for Simcoe County: ski hills in winter, beaches and waterfront parks in summer, and day trips to Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Midland and Orillia. The downtown is compact and walkable; the rest of the city is car country. Most visitors pass through for a night or use it as a cheaper, quieter alternative to Toronto for the lake and the hills.

Getting around
Barrie Transit runs about a dozen bus routes with hubs at the Downtown Mini Hub and Allandale Waterfront GO Station; GO train riders get one free Barrie Transit ride within 30 minutes of arrival or departure if they show a Presto card or GO ticket. Otherwise the city is built for cars: 20 minutes covers almost any cross-town trip in good weather. Avoid Bayfield Street on summer weekends and holidays, when Toronto beach traffic to Wasaga Beach and Georgian Bay funnels through it.

Watch out
Safety
- Winter snow squalls can close Highway 400 and side roads with little warning: check conditions before driving.
- Summer thunderstorms over the lake can be severe; get off the water and off the beach when one rolls in.
- Bayfield Street jams on summer weekends and statutory holidays.
- Barrie South GO Station is not useful for the downtown: use Allandale Waterfront.
