Akureyri is Iceland's second city and the practical capital of the north, sitting at the head of Eyjafjörður about 390 km by road from Reykjavík. The town itself is small and walkable — church, botanical garden, old houses, a geothermal pool — but its real value is as a base: Mývatn, Húsavík and the Tröllaskagi coast are all day-trip distance. Come June–September for the midnight sun and full access; winter works for northern lights but expect snow and short days.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; hills start as soon as you leave the waterfront. The town bus (SVA) is free and runs roughly hourly from the Miðbær stop, weekdays about 06:30–19:30 with one route (A6) later and at weekends 12:00–18:00. Hreyfill is the local taxi firm with a rank in the centre. Paid parking applies downtown Mon–Fri 10:00–16:00. Bikes can be rented at The Viking on Hafnarstræti: kr 1,000 for 6 hours, kr 1,800 a day.

Watch out

Safety

Akureyri is a low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are weather and driving: sudden snow, wind on single-lane bridges and long distances with few services. Check road and weather reports before every drive, and never walk onto glacier or sea-ice terrain without a guide.
  • Weather changes fast and the Ring Road valley west of town can be slow in bad conditions; check road and weather reports before driving.
  • Snow is common Dec–Feb and can arrive earlier than in Reykjavík; winter tyres and buffer days matter.
  • Some tours (whale watching, Mývatn, highland access) run only in summer — book ahead in Jul–Aug.
  • Tipping is not expected; card payment is normal almost everywhere.
  • Clubs close around 01:00 on weekdays; plan a late meal rather than a late night.
