Blackpool is a seaside resort on the Lancashire coast, built for mass holidays from the 1840s onwards and still running on that model: a 158 m tower, three piers, a big amusement park and 6 miles of promenade lights. The seafront strip is walkable and cheap, the town behind it is not pretty, and most visitors come for one or two nights rather than a week. Come for the rides and the lights, not for a quiet beach.

Getting around

The seafront is flat and walkable, but the central promenade between Pleasure Beach and Bispham alone is about 4 miles (6.4 km), so use the tram for longer hops. Trams run the full seafront from Starr Gate to Fleetwood, roughly every 15 min in the day and every 30 min into the evening. Blackpool Transport buses cover the town; a zone 1 single and a 24-hour ticket are the useful options. Taxis are metered with a council-set maximum fare.

Watch out

Safety

Blackpool is a normal British resort town: petty theft and late-night drink trouble around the seafront bars are the main issues, and the sea itself is the bigger risk. Watch the tide and the gullies, keep to lit streets at night, and treat very cheap seafront accommodation with suspicion.
  • The beach has gullies near the sea wall that flood behind you as the tide comes in; if a shore watchman waves and shouts, return to the promenade.
  • Many Tower attractions and pier rides close or run reduced hours in winter; check before travelling.
  • The Illuminations run from late August to early January only.
  • Some seafront bars and arcades are rowdy at weekends; hen and stag groups are common.
  • Blackpool airport has no scheduled passenger flights.
