Bengkulu is a quiet Sumatran coastal capital, once the British East India Company's pepper post of Bencoolen and later a Dutch exile for Sukarno. Sights are close together and cheap; the draw is history and slow beach evenings, not resorts. It is a 1-hour flight from Jakarta and a long bus ride from anywhere else.

Angkot minivans are the only public transport: Rp4,000 flat per trip, roughly 06:00–18:00, no fixed stops — hail anywhere and say your destination before boarding. They are colour-coded (yellow, green, red, blue, white) and drivers rarely speak English. For the fort, beach and museums, a metered taxi or ride-hailing car is easier; agree the fare first.

- Bengkulu sits near the Sunda Fault: know your hotel's evacuation route and follow official warnings after any quake.
- Rip currents and coral make most beaches unsafe for swimming; only Jakat Beach is calmer, and even there stay shallow.
- Angkot stop running in the early evening; plan taxis for dinner.
