Hornepayne is a railway divisional point of about a thousand people in Algoma District, near the geographic centre of Ontario. VIA Rail's The Canadian stops here to stretch legs; Highway 631 links the town north to Highway 11 and south to Highway 17. There is one hotel, one grocery store and a handful of places to eat. Come for fishing at Nagagamisis Provincial Park, snowmobiling on the OFSC D108A connector, or a single night off the train. There is no scheduled air service and no bus.

Safety

The town itself is quiet and low-risk. The real hazards are distance and weather: no mobile signal beyond about 15 km, one fuel station, and winter storms that close Hwy 631.
  • Mobile coverage stops about 15 km outside town: Hwy 631 north to Hwy 11 and south to Hwy 17 have no signal.
  • The VIA stop is a signpost station with no services and a short stop: stay near the platform.
  • Fuel up before you leave: the Esso on Hwy 631 is the only station, and the next town is 100 km or more.
  • Winter driving on Hwy 631 can close in storms; check road conditions before setting out.
