Puhoi
Stop for 2–3 hours on the SH1 run north: museum, church, a drink at the 1879 pub, then drive on. Sleep here only if you want the river at dawn.
Puhoi is a Bohemian settler village of about 360 people, 45–50 min north of central Auckland on SH1. Two streets, a museum, an 1881 Catholic church, a country pub and a river you can paddle to the coast. It is a half-day stop, not a destination: most travellers pair it with Wenderholm or Warkworth and keep moving.

Rules in force · 7
- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around
You need a car. Puhoi is 6 km off SH1 at the Puhoi turn-off; InterCity coaches between Auckland and Kerikeri stop there (about 4 a day each way) but leave you on the highway, a walk from the village (check the walk time with the operator). Once in Puhoi everything on Puhoi Rd is walkable in 10 minutes. Canoe hire includes a shuttle back from Wenderholm.

Puhoi village (Puhoi Rd and Saleyards Rd)
The pub has about 7 rooms with shared bathrooms (single about $80, double about $140); a handful of holiday rentals sit within walking distance. Book ahead in summer.
Warkworth, 16 km north
More beds, cafés and a supermarket; 15 min up SH1. The practical base if Puhoi is full.
Orewa or Silverdale
Beach town and motorway services south of Puhoi; an easy start for an early Auckland departure.

Watch out
Safety
- The village is off SH1, not on it: the coach stop is a 20–25 min walk, and there is no local bus.
- The Northern Gateway toll road north of Auckland is electronic-only; rental companies usually bill the toll plus an admin fee.
- One-lane bridges on the Puhoi and Wenderholm roads: give way to the left-marked side and slow down.
- Museum and Couldrey House keep short, volunteer-run hours (museum noon–3 pm, Couldrey House Sat–Sun 1–4 pm); check before driving out.
- River levels rise fast after rain; canoe operators cancel when the flow is too high.
