San MarcosSan Marcos, Texas

Give San Marcos one full day for the river and the springs, two if you want the outlets: it is a stop between Austin and San Antonio, not a base.

San Marcos is a college town on I-35, about 30 minutes south of Austin and 45 minutes north of San Antonio, built around a spring-fed river that runs straight through the middle. Texas State University sets the rhythm: cheap food, bars open late, tubing in summer. Most travellers see it as a half-day on the drive between the two big cities, or as a one-night stop for the outlets and the river.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, springs and outlets are spread along I-35 and parking is mostly free. CARTS runs limited local buses at 50 cents a ride (check). Downtown and campus are flat and short enough to walk or cycle.

Austin

go

Door to door: 35–50 min by car

Do it as a day or as the next stop; traffic peaks 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:30.

New Braunfels

go

Door to door: 25–35 min by car

I-35 south, about 19 miles

German heritage downtown and the Comal River; a natural pairing with tubing here.

Wimberley

go

Door to door: 25–30 min by car

RM 12 west, about 15 miles

Small square with shops; Jacob's Well is a deep spring with a dangerous cave system — swim only in the marked area.

San Antonio

Door to door: 50–70 min by car

I-35 south, about 46 miles

Too much for a rushed return day; sleep there and see the missions and the River Walk.

Hill Country wine and German food; better as a night than a loop.

Downtown / The Square

Walk to bars, restaurants and the river put-in; limited parking, some lots tow aggressively.

I-35 frontage road

Chain hotels with free parking, 5–10 min drive from the square; best with a car.

Outlet mall area (south I-35)

Cheapest rooms, walk to the malls, nothing else nearby.

Watch out

Safety

A small, generally safe city; the real risks are the river (current, cold spring water, no cell signal in the valley) and summer heat. Credit cards work almost everywhere, so you rarely need much cash.
  • Never drive through a flooded low-water crossing — a few inches of moving water can take a car.
  • Cell signal drops in the river valley; check your phone at the towel spot before swimming.
  • Some downtown lots tow aggressively: read the signs.
  • Tubing is seasonal and river flow can close it after dry spells — check before you rent.
