Positano is one steep staircase of a town: a single coastal road, two beaches, and hotels stacked above the water. It is the most photographed stop on the Amalfi Coast and the most expensive and most crowded. Two nights is enough to see it, swim, and take one boat trip; longer only pays off if you use it as a base for the whole coast, which the buses and ferries make slow.

Getting around

Everything is stairs or the one meandering road. A local orange bus loops the town; Unico Campania tickets are not valid on it — buy a ticket in a shop or pay the driver more. SITA buses run along the coast to Sorrento and Amalfi but are slow and packed in season. Ferries link Positano with Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri and Salerno from spring to autumn. Driving in is a mistake in summer: parking is scarce and must be reserved.

Watch out

Safety

Positano is a safe, small town; the real risks are the stairs, summer heat, and sea conditions that cancel ferries. Watch your footing on wet steps and keep bags zipped on packed buses.
  • Stairs everywhere: pack light and expect to carry bags up flights to your room.
  • Summer SITA buses fill up; you may wait an hour or more to board.
  • Ferries are seasonal and stop in rough weather — keep a bus fallback.
  • Beach clubs charge for sunbeds and umbrellas; ask the price before sitting.
  • Restaurants on the seafront cost far more than places up Viale Pasitea.
