Pyhä (Pyhätunturi) is a small fell resort in south-east Lapland, mostly in Pelkosenniemi municipality, built on the slope of a five-peak fell group beside Pyhä-Luosto National Park. It is a winter sports and hiking base rather than a town: 14 pistes, 5,300 beds mostly in cottages, a grocery store and a handful of restaurants. The nearest real town is Kemijärvi, 57 km away. Two to three nights covers the pistes or the main trails; a week suits skiers and repeat visitors.

Getting around

The resort is small and mostly walkable or skiable, but it sits on a fell slope with real elevation change. From January to April the free Pyhä shuttle runs a circular route around the resort. Otherwise use taxi (Taxi Haikonen, Valopilkku or 02 Taksi apps) or long-distance coaches; a SkiBus hop between Pyhä and Luosto costs about €7.

Watch out

Safety

Finland is a low-crime country and the resort is small; the real risks are winter: avalanche terrain in the ravines, ice on paths, cold exposure and long distances to a pharmacy or hospital.
  • Off-piste in the steep treeless ravines is avalanche terrain: check conditions before leaving marked routes.
  • The nearest pharmacy is in Pelkosenniemi village (25 km) and the nearest Alko in Kemijärvi (57 km).
  • Two private medical stations operate at the resort; the public health station is in Pelkosenniemi. Check your insurance covers winter sports.
  • Winter roads are icy and headlights are always on; winter tyres are required Dec–Feb.
  • Between late April and November many services run reduced hours: check before booking.
