Naxos is the largest Cyclades island and the easiest first island: a working port town, sandy west-coast beaches reachable by bus, and a green mountain interior with marble villages. It takes more visitors than Santorini or Mykonos, so beds and tavernas cost less and the port stays calm. Three nights covers the coast; four adds the villages and Mount Zas.

Getting around

Local buses run 10 lines from the Chora seafront office; buy a ticket before boarding (about €2). Villages may get only 3 buses a day. Renting a car, quad or scooter opens the interior and the east coast; roads are well maintained but narrow and fast-driven. Chora itself is walkable and partly pedestrianised.

Watch out

Safety

Naxos is a low-crime island and safe for families; the real risks are fast driving on mountain roads, sea urchins and rip currents at exposed beaches, and summer heat on the Zas trail.
  • Meltemi wind in Jul–Aug can cancel ferries and whip up beaches; keep a buffer day before a flight.
  • Summer rain is rare but arrives as a heavy storm that makes marble paths and streets slippery.
  • Mountain roads have blind bends and fast trucks; quads are steadier than scooters.
  • On the east side (Moutsouna, Panermos) the last petrol station is near Filoti — fill up before you cross.
  • Ferry timetables change by season and weather: confirm the day before you travel.
