Bourton-on-the-Water is a large Cotswold village on the River Windrush, with low stone bridges along a single main street. Almost everything sits within a 15-minute walk: the Model Village, Birdland, the motoring museum and the church. It is a base for the Cotswolds, not a destination in itself, and it is busiest in the middle of the day.

Getting around

On foot. The village is about 1 km end to end and the riverside path links the car park, the museums and the church. Buses 801, 802, 803 and 855 (Pulhams) connect Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cheltenham and Cirencester; services are sparse on Sundays and in winter, so check the current timetable before you rely on one.

Very safe. The real risks are slippery riverside paths, traffic on the A429 through the village, and being stranded when the last bus leaves: check the timetable before your evening meal.
  • The village is a day-trip honeypot: the High Street and car parks are packed roughly 11:00–16:00 in summer.
  • Buses to Moreton-in-Marsh and Cheltenham are infrequent and stop early; a missed last bus means a taxi or an unplanned night.
  • Riverside paths and bridge steps are slippery after rain, and there are no barriers along the water.
  • Parking is limited and charges apply; arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 in peak season.
  • Many small shops and tea rooms close by 17:00, and some shut one weekday.
