Skip Hermantown as a base: it is a Duluth suburb with no sights of its own. Sleep here only if the airport or a Miller Trunk motel price wins.
Hermantown is a residential and retail suburb on Duluth's western edge, about 9,700 residents, wrapped around the Miller Trunk Highway (US-53) strip of chain stores, motels and restaurants. It has no museum, no historic core and no walkable centre. Almost everything a visitor wants — Canal Park, the lakefront, the lift bridge, Park Point — sits in Duluth, 10–20 minutes away by car. Treat Hermantown as a bed and a shopping stop, not a destination.

A private car is the only practical option. DTA buses reach the airport, the Wal-Mart and Haines Road but stop at the edges of town and run infrequently. From Hermantown you drive 10–20 min into Duluth for anything worth seeing.
