Charles TownCharles Town, West Virginia

Give Charles Town one night, not three: the historic district and museum take half a day, the casino and races fill the evening.

Charles Town is a small historic town of about 9,000 in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, roughly 1 h 15 min by car from Washington, DC. It is a courthouse-and-horses town: John Brown was tried and hanged here in 1859, and thoroughbred racing has run since the 1930s. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Harpers Ferry and the Shenandoah Valley, or as a cheap bed base with a casino attached.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. The old town is a walkable grid — Washington St (Route 51) runs east–west, George St (Route 115) north–south, and East/West or North/South in a street name tells you the side of those two. Route 340 and Route 9 link the town to Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg and Leesburg. There is no useful local bus for visitors; taxis and rideshare are thin, so book a return ride if you drink.

Doable as a day trip by car, but weekday traffic makes the train the better call.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime for a US town of this size; the real risks are highway driving at dusk, thin late-night rideshare, and drinking on a casino floor with no walkable hotel.
  • Rideshare and taxi supply is thin, especially late; line up a ride before a casino night.
  • Route 340 and Route 9 are two-lane in places with deer at dusk — avoid driving after dark in autumn.
  • Casino and racetrack floors are 21+; bring photo ID.
  • Many small museums and historic houses keep short, seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
