Kirkland Lake is a small gold-mining town of about 8,000 people in Timiskaming District, northeastern Ontario, on Highway 66 where the Trans-Canada branch runs west toward Highway 11 and east into Quebec as Highway 117. There is still a working gold mine in town and the rest of the economy supports it. Sights are few and spread along Government Road; the town works as a single overnight on a northern Ontario drive or as a bus stop on the Ontario Northland North Bay–Timmins route, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

You need a car or a taxi. Government Road is the main strip and the museum, memorial and motels sit along it; downtown is a short drive away. There is no local transit worth planning around. Ontario Northland buses stop in town on the North Bay–Timmins route, with a timed connection at Matheson from Cochrane.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are winter driving, wildlife on Highway 66 at dusk and long gaps between services. Violent crime is rare, but lock your car and do not leave valuables visible at trailheads.
  • Distances between sights are longer than they look; the park is about 30 km northeast of town.
  • Esker Lakes Provincial Park is open Victoria Day weekend to Labour Day only; outside that window the gate is closed.
  • Winter driving on Highway 66 and 11: snow squalls close sections; check Ontario 511 before you leave.
  • Cell coverage drops on the highway between towns; download offline maps.
