Go for a summit: start the Cibodas gate at 06:00–07:00, climb to Gede's crater rim in 5–7 h, and sleep at Kandang Badak if you want Pangrango too; skip it on weekends and Indonesian holidays, when the trail runs in queues.

Mount Gede Pangrango National Park is the closest big mountain to Jakarta: two volcanoes, Gede at 2,958 m and Pangrango at 3,019 m, joined by a saddle, about 60 km south of the capital between Bogor, Cianjur and Sukabumi. It is the most-visited national park in Indonesia because Greater Jakarta can reach the Cibodas gate in a morning. Three official gates exist — Cibodas and Gunung Putri on the north side, Selabintana near Sukabumi on the south — and every other route is unmarked, without rescue cover. The park holds Javan wildlife that survives almost nowhere else at this scale: silvery gibbon, Javan surili, Javan lutung, Javan leopard and Java mouse-deer, in cloud forest above the Cibodas botanical garden. Climbing is a real overnight mountain trip, not a stroll: cold, windy summits, muddy roots, and weekend quotas that fill.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The Cibodas botanical garden and Situgunung lake area have paths suitable for limited mobility.
  • The summit trails are steep, rooty and not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Visiting lightly

  • Take all rubbish down, including food wrappers and tissues.
  • Use established campsites and shelters rather than clearing new ground.
  • Hire local guides and porters from Cibodas or Sukabumi so the park's villages benefit.
  • Keep group sizes small on weekends to reduce trail damage.
