San Juan

Give San Juan one full day for the centre and the dinosaur museum, then use it as a base for Ischigualasto or Barreal — not as a city break on its own.

San Juan is a low-rise wine city in a dry Andean valley, rebuilt on wide tree-lined avenues after the 1944 earthquake. The centre is walkable in half a day; the reason most travellers stop is the province around it — Ischigualasto (Valle de la Luna), Barreal and the Ullum reservoir. Flights from Buenos Aires take about 2 hours; the long-distance bus from Mendoza is about 3 hours.

  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Argentina ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Argentina's National Migration Directorate (Migraciones) or an Argentine consulate before booking.
  • Argentina ↗Since April 2025 the official, MEP and street ('blue') dollar rates sit within a few percent of each other; a foreign card is usually the best-value way to pay, while ATM withdrawals carry high fixed fees. Rules have changed often — check before you fly.
  • Argentina ↗Patagonia (El Calafate, El Chaltén, Ushuaia) is a November–March trip; in winter many services close and hiking is limited.
  • Argentina ↗Since August 2026 non-resident foreigners must show insurance or pay for non-urgent care at nationally run public hospitals, and Buenos Aires City, Mendoza, Salta, Jujuy and Santa Cruz charge visitors for scheduled care; emergencies are still treated. Travel with medical insurance — check the current rules.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable: Plaza 25 de Mayo to Parque de Mayo is about 2.5 km. City buses, taxis and remises cover the rest; remises are booked by phone or app rather than hailed. For Ischigualasto, Barreal or the Ullum reservoir you need a car, a tour or a long-distance bus.

Ischigualasto Provincial Park (Valle de la Luna)

overnight

Door to door: Full day, 10–12 h

Car or organised tour via Ruta 40 and San Agustín de Valle Fértil; about 330 km (205 mi) from the city

Too far for a comfortable return day: sleep in San Agustín de Valle Fértil and enter the park early.

Barreal

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h each way

Car or bus south-west into the Calingasta valley

Andes views and the Cuesta del Viento area; better as one or two nights than a day trip.

Ullum Reservoir (Dique de Ullum)

go

Door to door: Half day

Car or taxi, about 18 km (11 mi) north-west of the city

Water sports and viewpoints in a dry valley; go early in summer.

San José de Jáchal

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h each way

Car or bus north on Ruta 40

Colonial town and the Iglesia valley; pair it with the north of the province.

Around Plaza 25 de Mayo

The centre: cathedral, cafés, pedestrian blocks on Tucumán and Rivadavia; walk to most sights.

Parque de Mayo side

2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) west of the plaza, greener and quieter; the dinosaur museum and the urban history museum are here.

Route 20 / Viñas del Sol

Car-oriented hotels south-east of the centre; only worth it with a car or for a quiet night.

Watch out

Safety

San Juan is a calm, low-rise city and the centre is fine on foot in daylight and early evening. Use remises or taxis after dark, keep valuables out of sight in bus terminals, and treat the summer heat and long empty roads as the real risks.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35–40 °C (95–104 °F): shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
  • Museum and winery hours are limited and change; the dinosaur museum has been closed on Mondays — check before you go.
  • Some official tourism and museum links are outdated; confirm addresses and hours locally.
  • Cash still matters: carry pesos for buses, remises and small cafés.
