Palmela is a hill town on the Setúbal Peninsula, 40 km south of Lisbon, known for its castle, its wine cooperative and the surrounding vineyards. The historic centre is small: the castle, the church and a handful of streets take half a day. Most travellers see it as a stop from Setúbal or Lisbon, or as a quiet base for the Arrábida coast and the Sado estuary.

Getting around

The old town is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses (TST) link Palmela with Setúbal, Pinhal Novo and Lisbon Oriente; the train station is 2 km below the town, so plan a taxi or a long uphill walk. A car makes the wineries and the Arrábida coast far easier.

Watch out

Safety

Palmela is a low-crime small town; the real risks are summer heat, the steep walk up from the station and unlit rural roads if you drive after wine tastings.
  • The train station is downhill from the centre: the climb is steep and there is little shade in summer.
  • Many winery visits are by appointment only, and some close on Tuesdays or at weekends.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and do the castle early.
  • Some estate roads are unsigned; use a map app and allow extra time.
