  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Austin is the Texas capital, a university city and the self-styled live-music capital, sitting on the southeast edge of the Hill Country. Downtown, South Congress and East Austin hold most of what a visitor does; the rest of the city is car country. Three nights covers the core, and spring or autumn is when the weather lets you walk it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown, South Congress and the UT strip are walkable in good weather. Capital Metro buses cover the main corridors; a 24-hour local pass is cheap. Rideshare is the default for anything outside the centre — Austin is spread out and the bus network is thin by US standards. Bike share stations sit downtown, near UT and in South Austin.

Watch out

Safety

Central Austin is busy and generally safe in daylight. The real risks are summer heat, aggressive drivers, and late-night bar streets: keep to lit blocks, watch your drink, and don't walk alone after 02:00.
  • Summer heat is the real hazard: plan indoor stops and water between 11:00 and 17:00, and never leave anyone in a parked car.
  • Spring brings severe thunderstorms and occasional hail; check the forecast before an outdoor day.
  • Winter ice storms can close roads and cut power once or twice a season, roughly late Dec–mid-Feb.
  • 6th Street bar crowds late at night: watch drinks and keep to lit blocks.
