Koper is Slovenia's only commercial port and its oldest town, built on a former island and shaped by 500 years of Venetian rule. The old core around Titov trg is small, fully restored and walkable in an afternoon, with the coast's best bus and train links to Ljubljana, Trieste and Italy. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a transport hub rather than a beach base; Piran, 20 minutes away, is the prettier place to sleep.

Getting around

The old town is car-free in practice and covered on foot in 20–30 minutes end to end. Local Arriva city buses run between the bus station, the centre and the port area; buy a card at the tourist office or the kiosk at the bus station, since cash on board is not accepted. Taxis inside the district are a flat low fare, but drivers waiting at the bus and train stations have a record of overcharging.

Watch out

Safety

Koper is a low-risk town; the real annoyances are taxi overcharging at the stations, summer port crowds and the odd slip on polished old-town stone. Keep an eye on bags in the marina area at night.
  • Taxis at the bus and train stations quote more than double the normal in-town fare: call a local taxi or agree the price first.
  • You need a vignette (highway toll sticker) before driving on Slovenian motorways; buy it at the border fuel station, as checks and fines start right after.
  • Parking in the centre is enforced; some public lots are free at weekends and after hours.
  • Summer weekends fill the old town with day-trippers from the port and the coast; mornings are calmer.
