Vega is a town of about 930 people on the old Route 66 in the Texas Panhandle, 35 mi west of Amarillo on I-40. It has one walkable block of Route 66 heritage — a restored 1920s Magnolia filling station, a free farm and ranch museum, a 1900s hardware store — plus a rodeo on the second Saturday of August. Almost everyone arrives by car and leaves the same day. Treat it as a leg-stretch and a photo stop, or as a cheap bed if Amarillo is full.

Getting around

You need a car. Vega sits on I-40 exit 36, with US 385 crossing north–south. The historic block is small enough to walk once you park: courthouse, Magnolia station, museum and hardware store are within about 0.5 mi. No local bus, no taxi rank; fuel up on I-40 before the New Mexico line, where services thin out.

Safety

Very low street crime; the real risks are highway driving, summer heat and long gaps between services. Lock the car and keep water in it.
  • Distances are long and services are sparse west of town toward the New Mexico border: leave with a full tank.
  • Summer afternoons reach 32–35 °C with little shade on the museum grounds; go before 11:00 or after 17:00.
  • Winter ice and blowing dust close I-40 in this stretch; check Texas road conditions before driving.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the back roads; download offline maps.
