Cienfuegos
Give Cienfuegos one night, two at most: the UNESCO centre and Punta Gorda are a half-day each, and the bay walk is the point.
Cienfuegos is the only Cuban city founded by the French, and it shows: wider streets, a neoclassical square and a low, unhurried centre. Two clusters matter, Pueblo Nuevo (the historic centre) and Punta Gorda, a peninsula of 1950s houses about 3 km south along Calle 37. One full day covers both; a second day buys Laguna Guanaroca and the Castillo de Jagua. Beyond that you run out of things to do, so most travellers pair it with Trinidad, an hour away.

Most independent travellers use 'support for the Cuban people', which needs a full-time schedule of activities with Cuban people and private businesses (casas, paladares, private guides), and records kept for 5 years. US persons may not stay at properties on the State Department's Cuba Prohibited Accommodations List (11 more Havana hotels added 14 July 2025) or deal directly with entities on the Cuba Restricted List (GAESA and other military-linked businesses). Rules tightened in 2025–26; check OFAC before booking (checked 2026-09).
- Cuba ↗Medical insurance is compulsory for entry: carry proof of a policy valid in Cuba, or buy a Cuban (Asistur) policy on arrival. US-based insurers are generally not accepted in Cuba; flights from the US include a Cuban medical policy in the fare — keep the boarding pass as proof (check with your airline). Hospital bills are payable in cash only, so buy cover with medical evacuation as well (checked 2026-09).
- Cuba ↗No cards: US-issued debit and credit cards have never worked in Cuba because of the embargo, and since 6 June 2026 Visa and Mastercard cards from any country are no longer accepted (Cuban Central Bank, after a foreign processor dropped FINCIMEX under US Executive Order 14404). Bring enough US dollars or euros in cash for the whole stay plus an emergency reserve (checked 2026-09).

Getting around
Walk. The centre and Punta Gorda are joined by Calle 37 (Paseo del Prado), about 3 km end to end, and both halves are compact. Horse-drawn carts (coches) run up and down Calle 37; tourists are usually quoted more than locals. Taxis are arranged through your casa or hotel, which is the easy way to reach Playa Rancho Luna or Laguna Guanaroca.

Watch out
Safety
- Cienfuegos has some of Cuba's strictest anti-prostitution policing. Asking a local woman for directions after dark can get her detained, so keep night-time contact brief and public.
- If you invite a Cuban guest to your casa particular, they must sign the guest book: homeowners have lost their properties over unsigned entries.
- Bring cash. Cards issued by US banks do not work, and ATM and card failures are common; budget in euros or dollars and change what you need.
- Power cuts and fuel shortages are routine. Keep a torch, a power bank and a buffer day.
- Trains from Havana run roughly every second day and are slow; confirm any departure before you rely on it.
