Umuahia is the capital of Abia State and the second capital of Biafra during the 1967–1971 civil war, which is why its one unmissable stop is the National War Museum and the bunker where Ojukwu ran the breakaway government. It is a low-rise Igbo market and university town, not a resort: roads are quiet, tricycles are cheap, and the draw is civil-war history, yam-and-cassava markets and the Ekpe and New Yam festivals. Most travellers pass through on the Enugu–Port Harcourt corridor and stay one or two nights.

Getting around

Keke (commercial tricycle) is the main way to move and the town rarely jams; agree the fare before you board. State-run Green Shuttle buses and shared taxis cover longer hops. For the War Museum and Ojukwu's Bunker, take a keke or arrange a car for the morning — the bunker annex is at Okpara Avenue, away from the museum road.

Umuahia itself is a quiet, low-density town and the usual risks are petty theft in markets and bad roads after rain. The bigger question is state-level: check your government's advice for Abia State, keep road travel to daylight and use a known driver for anything outside town.
