İzmit
Stop for one night only if you are already on the Istanbul–Ankara rail or road corridor; İzmit is an industrial port city, not a destination.
İzmit is the capital of Kocaeli province and a working port at the head of the Gulf of İzmit, about 100 km east of Istanbul on the main Anatolian transport corridor. Its Ottoman core was largely lost to the 1999 earthquake, so the draw is a compact clock-tower quarter, a handful of small museums and fast rail links onward. Most travellers pass through; one night is enough if you stop at all.

Getting around
The clock-tower quarter is walkable. Everything else sprawls: use the Akçaray tram (bus station – centre – Seka), dolmuş or taxi. İnönü Cd runs one-way westbound and Cumhuriyet Cd is two-way, so pick your direction before you flag anything down.

Safety
- The 1999 earthquake destroyed most of the historic centre; do not expect an old Ottoman town.
- The head of the gulf is commercial and military docks — the water is not for swimming.
- D100 through the centre is often congested; use O-4/E80 or O-7 if driving past.
- Museum opening hours and small entry fees change; confirm before you go (check).
- Winter nights can drop below freezing from November to May; mornings bring gulf mist.
