Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Rhenen is a small Nederrijn town of about 20,000 people on the south edge of the Utrecht Hill Ridge, 45 minutes by train from Utrecht. It has two anchors most travellers come for: Ouwehands Dierenpark, one of the country's busiest zoos and home to two giant pandas, and the Grebbeberg, a wooded ridge with a 1940 war cemetery and the May 1940 battle line. The compact centre, rebuilt after wartime damage, takes an hour on foot. Most people visit as a day trip; a single night is enough if you want the zoo at opening.

Watch out

Safety

Rhenen is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are uneven dyke paths, fast cyclists on the ridge and the river's cold current. Standard precautions are enough.
  • Zoo tickets are dated and cheaper online; buy before you travel, especially at weekends.
  • The Grebbeberg cemetery is an active memorial site: keep quiet and do not picnic among the graves.
  • Cunerakerk tower access is limited to set hours and a small fee; the church itself is free.
  • Rhenen station is a 15-minute walk from the centre; there is no taxi rank to rely on.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Rhenen. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (crowded zoo days), school holidays · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for AMS: last sprinter from Utrecht field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Kerkplein and the Cunera tower, the Utrechtsestraat restaurant strip, the Grebbeberg ridge.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Ouwehands Dierenpark, Militair Ereveld Grebbeberg, Cunerakerk) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Zoo-day fixture so gates A–D can go green on a dated ticket.
