Reading is a large town, not a city, on the Thames and Kennet about 30 minutes by train from London Paddington. Its draw is the medieval abbey ruins and minster, the riverside, and its position as a rail hub for Windsor, Oxford and the Berkshire Downs. Most travellers pass through; one night is enough unless you are here for business or a festival.

Getting around

Central Reading is walkable: station to abbey ruins and both rivers is under 15 min on foot. Reading Buses cover the outer suburbs, with route 17 running 24 hours. Black cabs rank outside the rail station; minicabs must be pre-booked and have a council plate on the rear. Driving in the centre is congested at peak times; use the Mereoak or Winnersh Triangle park and ride.

Safety

Reading is a normal, generally safe English town; the real risks are pickpockets around the Oracle and station at night, unbooked minicabs, and the fast A33 and Inner Distribution Road if you cycle.
  • Reading is a town, not a city: calling it a city raises eyebrows locally.
  • The Reading–Paddington line is one of the UK's most crowded; morning peak trains into London may be standing room only.
  • Only black cabs may be hailed; never take an unbooked minicab.
  • Bike theft is above the national average: lock securely and discreetly.
  • Reading Festival in late August fills hotels and raises prices: book months ahead.
