Dnipro is a large industrial city on the Dnieper, built around a Soviet military industry that barred foreigners until the 1990s. Its centre is a walkable line of pre-revolutionary, Stalinist and constructivist buildings along Prospekt Dmytra Yavornytskoho, with the river and Monastyrskyi Island at the east end. Ukraine's airspace is closed, so arrival is by long train from Kyiv or the west, and the city is a working city first and a sightseeing city second.

Getting around

One metro line, plus trams, trolleybuses and buses; single rides are cheap (bus about 15 грн, tram/trolleybus/metro about 8 грн — check current fares). Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt, Uklon and others) are the easy option for point-to-point trips. Schedules are posted by the city transport operator and on mapping apps.
