Give Biella one full day plus a half-day for Oropa: base in Biella Piano, ride the funicular up to Piazzo, and skip it entirely if you have no car and no interest in wool.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Biella is a wool town of about 46,000 people in the foothills of the Biellese Alps, 80 km northeast of Turin and the same distance west of Milan. It splits into a lower town (Biella Piano) and a medieval upper town (Biella Piazzo) linked by a funicular. The reason to come is the Sanctuary of Oropa, a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage site 13 km uphill, plus the textile outlets and the Alpine sanctuaries around it. Two nights covers the town and Oropa without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable; the climb to Piazzo is tiring on foot, so use the funicular between Via Curiel (Piano) and Via Avogadro (Piazzo). ATAP runs city and suburban buses, including services up to Oropa. A car makes the sanctuaries, Candelo and the outlets far easier; without one you are tied to bus times.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Sanctuary of Oropa

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

ATAP bus from Biella, or 13 km by car up the valley road

UNESCO pilgrimage site with the Black Madonna, old and new basilicas, a botanical garden and sanctuary guest rooms. Go early; the complex is large.

Ricetto di Candelo

go

Door to door: About 20–30 min

About 5 km southeast of town by car or local bus

Fortified medieval storehouse village, one of the best preserved in Europe; artisan shops and restaurants inside.

Bessa Natural Reserve

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Car to Cerrione, then walk

Former Roman gold mine now overgrown; paths are rough and there is little shade.

Sanctuary of Graglia

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Car up the valley road

Sacro Monte begun in 1616 as a 'New Jerusalem'; quiet, and best combined with a valley drive.

Lake Viverone

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Car or bus toward the A5 corridor

Wine route start point; Roppolo Castle holds the regional wine shop for Erbaluce and Canavese DOC wines.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Biella Piano (lower town)

Around Via Italia and the station: shops, cafés, hotels and the funicular lower station on Via Curiel. Best for a short stay without a car.

Biella Piazzo (upper town)

Arcaded medieval streets, the synagogue and Palazzo La Marmora; quiet at night, reached by funicular from Via Curiel.

Oropa and the valleys

Sanctuary guest rooms and valley B&Bs; only worth it if you have a car and want mornings at Oropa or on the trails.

Watch out

Safety

Biella is a low-crime small city; the real risks are the uphill drive to Oropa, fast valley roads, and mountain weather. Standard precautions in the station area at night.
  • Oropa is 13 km uphill from town: check ATAP bus times before you rely on them, and note the last return.
  • Many sanctuary and museum interiors close at midday and on one weekday: check the official site before travelling.
  • Outlet stores keep shop hours, not tourist hours; some close Sunday and Monday morning.
  • Mountain weather turns fast above 1,000 (≈ US$1,200) m: carry a shell even on a clear morning.
  • ZTL camera zones apply in the old centre if you drive; park outside and walk in.
