Gallipolis
Give Gallipolis half a day: the riverfront, Our House Tavern and the courthouse, then drive on. One night only if you are breaking a US-35 run.
Gallipolis is a small Ohio River town of about 3,600 people in Gallia County, founded in 1790 by French settlers known as the French 500. It sits on US-35 just across the river from Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and works as a short stop on a Southeast Ohio drive rather than a destination in itself. The historic core is walkable in an hour or two; the surrounding county adds river views and country roads.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the realistic way to move here: US-35 runs through town and links Chillicothe to the west with Charleston, West Virginia to the east. Downtown is small enough to walk between the courthouse, Our House Tavern and the riverfront in 10–15 minutes. There is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances between sights in Gallia County are longer than they look; fill the tank in town.
- River fog and winter ice on US-35 can slow the drive; check road conditions before a night run.
- Many small museums and the French Art Colony keep limited hours — confirm before you drive out.
- Cell coverage thins on the back roads toward Rio Grande and the county line.
