Wichita

Give Wichita 2 nights with a car: Old Town for food and bars, Keeper of the Plains and the museums by day. Without a car, cut to 1 night.

Wichita is the largest city in Kansas and the aircraft-building capital of the Great Plains, about 3 hours by car from Kansas City or Oklahoma City. It is a driving city: sights are spread out, buses are slow, and parking is free almost everywhere. Two nights covers the core; add a night for the Flint Hills or the zoo.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Wichita is a driving city. Rent a car at ICT if you did not drive in: sights are far apart, taxis only queue at the airport, and buses run long routes with waits up to an hour. Uber and Lyft both operate. Streets follow an easy grid and parking is usually free, even downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Wichita is a normal mid-size US city: daytime sights and Old Town are fine, and the usual advice applies after dark — stay in lit areas, keep car doors locked, and use a rideshare rather than walking far at night.
  • Summer heat and humidity in Jul–Aug; plan indoor stops midday.
  • Spring brings severe-weather days: check local forecasts and know your shelter.
  • Buses are not a practical way to reach most sights: budget for a car or rideshare.
  • Old Town bar closing time brings crowds and traffic: book a rideshare before midnight.
