Muar is Johor's second city and its de jure royal capital, a flat river-mouth town of pre-war shophouses about 45 km south of Melaka and 166 km northwest of Johor Bahru. It is a food town first: asam pedas fish, otak-otak and Hainanese coffee. Sights are modest and spread out, so most travellers use it as a one-night stop on the Melaka–Johor Bahru road, or a day trip from Melaka.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable; bicycles and tricycles are common local transport. Taxis are chartered, not metered, and charge by distance, time and passengers — agree the fare before you get in. Buses link the two bus stations and outlying towns; a car or hired taxi is needed for Parit Jawa, Sungai Gersik and Pagoh.

Safety

Muar is a low-crime small city; the real risks are heat, traffic on the main roads, unmetered taxis and river or sea swimming, which is not recommended.
  • Taxis have no meters: fix the price before boarding.
  • Midday heat and afternoon storms: plan walks for early morning and after 16:00.
  • Some Hindu temples are under reconstruction or closed to casual visits — check before going.
  • The Indonesia ferry runs only Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, departing at noon.
